When to buy ahead and when to wait

· 1 min read

Buying ahead protects supply but costs cash and storage. The right choice depends on the part, not the market headline.

Buy ahead when

  • The part is single-sourced or hard to qualify
  • Lead times are rising across several suppliers
  • A lifecycle notice has been issued

Wait when

  • Several qualified alternates exist
  • Lead times are stable or falling
  • Demand forecasts are uncertain

Use a middle path

Scheduled deliveries or a buffer-stock program can secure supply without taking all inventory at once.
